leon is a free spirit, but also an enigma, of sorts. he speaks his mind, does what he wants when he wants it, and thinks of the consequences second - but he's also incredibly reserved and overthinking. he’s outgoing, and loves making emotional connections, rather than just fleeting social connections that are forgotten within a week, but fears rejection, abandonment, and the loss of a loved one - whether it be through death or simple out-growth. finding a way into his heart and getting him to trust you is one of the toughest tasks, but once you're in there.. he will make sure you never leave.
i. early life
leon kim was born into a broken home on may 17th of 1997. actually.. it was barely even a home. they lived just above the poverty line, and when leon's father flaked within the first year of his life, whatever financial security they had left with him, causing leon's mother to quickly fall back into bad habits consisting of drugs, sex and alcohol.
the boy's life was thus anything but stable.
aged 2, leon was taken away by child protective services, and for a while, his life was actually okay.. as far as he could remember, anyway. his records spoke of a small little family in the suburbs; with a stable mother, a loving father, foster siblings, and even a dog. it was a dream come true for a baby born into chaos.
sadly, however, his luck ran short.
the older he got, the more troublesome he became for the fostering couple and, eventually, they decided it was his time to move on. "he is a big boy now" they said. "we can't fit him into our family anymore".
thus, aged 12, he began bouncing around between foster homes - facing both goods and bads - trying his best to navigate the world that always seemed to fail him.
ii. adolescence
once leon turned 14, his birthmother managed to get her custody back. she claimed she was finally clean and sober and would make up for her past mistakes, but of course it was all lies. truth was that she only wanted the extra money having a child would bring in, and this resulted in leon being left on his own the majority of the time. she didn't care for him, and she never would. all leon had was himself, and he told himself it would always be that way.
so, he learned to fend for himself.
whatever money his mother managed to scrape together went mostly to her own fuel, and leon was left living on cafeteria food during school hours and whatever carbs he could find in their near empty kitchen at nighttime. sometimes he even managed to puppy-eye his way into joining his neighbors for dinner, other times he seeked shelter at a friend's home. he even stole some money from his mother and her "friends" whenever he got the chance, often resulting in a beating if caught - but he didn't care. he did whatever he had to to simply get by.
iii. the present
one night during his life in actual hell, leon came across a few old letters while raiding his mother's room for money. they were from her own parents - his grandparents - all the way over in korea, and after reading the contents of said letters, the boy got an idea in his head of this wonderful land where he could escape to and finally be.. okay.
and so, in secret, he wrote a letter of his own to the unfamilliar pair, explaining who he was, his situation, and asking for shelter and mayhaps even a new home - all of which the elderly couple were more than happy to provide should he turn 18. the pair were clearly more than aware of their daughter's poor habits, that much was clear to leon, even though her having a child seemed to be saddening news to them.
so, when 18 year old leon finally set foot in his homeland with a single bag holding all of his belongings, these two shriveled up strangers that looked ready for the grave did everything they could to make up for the years of neglect the boy had been faced with. they were ashamed for the mistakes their daughter had made, and in their mind, god would only forgive them if they gave this boy the life he was meant to have.
by no means did leon enjoy taking advantage of people - especially of those that seemed genuine - but this lonesome boy still stood firm in his belief that the only person he could ever truly depend on was himself.. and once again, leon did what he had to to get by.
he accepted all the gifts, stuffed his belly full of food.. but never did he allow the couple into his heart; no matter how hard they tried to enter.
Being a demisexual (a person who does not experience sexual attraction to another person unless/or until they have formed an emotional and/or intellectual connection with said person) Leon doesn't prefer one gender over the other. In fact, he doesn't really prefer anyone, to be honest. At the current point in his life, he's more focused on his studies and taking care of himself, rather than physical intimacy. Work. Noah is the type of student to read the literature in time and scribble incohesive notes about its contents in various notebooks, but to push actually writing papers and reports until last minute. Why? Even he doesn't know... maybe he's just too lazy to make sense of said notes, or maybe he simply works better under stress. Either way, this does make for quite an alright study buddy, as he's always more or less well prepared.
Freetime. Noah isn't one to go to parties on his own whim, but instead is that person you'd have to drag out of bed in order to get them to even leave their room. He's a homebody, to say the least, and while he doesn't mind social gatherings, he doesn't fully feel at home at them. Especially when he doesn't know anyone. Plus, the fact that he doesn't enjoy alcohol and winces as soon as the taste hits his tongue doesn't really help him.
